Choosing the right trailer is only part of safe and effective towing. How you load that trailer matters just as much.

Cargo placement affects tongue weight, trailer stability, tow-vehicle handling, braking, tire loading, axle loading, and overall towing performance. Improperly distributed cargo can contribute to trailer sway or place excessive weight on the trailer, hitch, tires, axles, or tow vehicle.

This guide explains the basics of trailer tongue weight, cargo placement, weight distribution, and what enclosed trailer owners should consider before hitting the road. What Is Trailer Tongue Weight?

Tongue weight is the downward force the trailer tongue applies to the tow vehicle's hitch.

When cargo is loaded into a trailer, its location affects how much weight is transferred to the hitch. Move cargo farther forward and tongue weight will generally increase. Move cargo farther toward the rear and tongue weight will generally decrease.

Proper trailer weight distribution is important because too little or too much tongue weight can negatively affect towing performance.

How Much Tongue Weight Should a Trailer Have?

A commonly referenced guideline for many conventional bumper-pull trailers is approximately:

10%–15% of the loaded trailer weight

For example, a trailer weighing 7,000 lbs when fully loaded might commonly have a tongue weight in the general range of 700–1,050 lbs.

However, this is only a general guideline. The appropriate tongue weight depends on the specific trailer, hitch, tow vehicle, cargo and manufacturer requirements. Always follow the ratings and recommendations for your specific equipment.

Why Too Little Tongue Weight Can Be a Problem

Loading too much cargo toward the rear of a trailer can reduce tongue weight. Insufficient tongue weight can contribute to trailer instability and trailer sway — the trailer moving side to side behind the tow vehicle.

Several factors can contribute to sway, including:

  • Improper cargo distribution
  • Insufficient tongue weight
  • Excessive speed
  • Tire problems
  • Wind
  • Road conditions
  • Improper hitch setup
  • Tow vehicle and trailer compatibility

Proper loading is therefore an important part of preparing a trailer for towing.

Why Too Much Tongue Weight Can Also Be a Problem

Simply moving as much weight forward as possible isn't the answer. Excessive tongue weight can place additional load on the:

  • Tow vehicle
  • Rear suspension
  • Rear axle
  • Hitch
  • Hitch receiver
  • Trailer coupler
  • Tires

Too much weight at the rear of the tow vehicle can also affect vehicle handling and front-axle loading. The goal is proper weight distribution while remaining within every applicable rating.

How Cargo Placement Changes Tongue Weight

Think of the trailer axles as a pivot point. Moving cargo relative to that pivot point changes how weight is transferred to the hitch.

Move Weight Forward

Tongue weight generally increases.

Move Weight Rearward

Tongue weight generally decreases.

Load Weight Side-to-Side Unevenly

Individual tires, wheels, bearings and suspension components may carry different loads, and trailer handling may be affected.

This is why cargo placement should be considered in three directions:

  • Front to rear
  • Side to side
  • Low to high

How to Properly Load an Enclosed Trailer

Loading a trailer correctly comes down to a handful of consistent habits. Here are seven steps to work through before every haul.

1. Know Your Trailer’s Weight Ratings

Before loading the trailer, locate its VIN/data plate. Pay attention to ratings including trailer GVWR, GAWR, tire ratings, and wheel ratings. Never exceed the trailer manufacturer's ratings, and also verify the tow vehicle and hitch are properly rated for the loaded trailer.

2. Know Your Trailer’s Empty Weight

The empty weight provides a starting point for determining how much cargo the trailer may be capable of carrying. A simplified payload calculation is:

GVWR − Empty Trailer Weight = Available Payload

For example: a 9,990 lb GVWR trailer minus a 3,200 lb empty trailer weight equals approximately 6,790 lbs of theoretical available payload, before considering other applicable component or vehicle limitations. 3. Know the Weight of Your Cargo

Don't rely solely on appearance — two similarly sized pieces of equipment can have dramatically different weights. Consider everything being carried, including vehicles, equipment, tools, spare tires, fuel, generators, batteries, cabinets, shelving, parts, supplies, and personal belongings.

Permanent trailer modifications and accessories can also increase empty trailer weight and reduce remaining payload.

4. Position Heavy Cargo Carefully

Heavy cargo should generally be positioned to maintain appropriate tongue weight and axle loading. Avoid concentrating excessive weight at the extreme rear of the trailer. At the same time, don't simply push everything against the front wall.

The objective is to achieve appropriate weight distribution while staying within the ratings of the trailer, tow vehicle, hitch and related components — including your trailer's trailer axle capacity.

5. Keep Heavy Items Low

Whenever practical, heavier cargo should be kept relatively low. A lower center of gravity can generally provide better stability than placing substantial weight high inside the trailer. Avoid stacking extremely heavy cargo high against trailer walls unless the trailer and cargo-restraint system are specifically designed for that application.

6. Balance Cargo Side to Side

Cargo should also be distributed appropriately from the driver's side to passenger side. Placing most of the cargo on one side can create uneven loading.

Consider the location of permanently installed equipment as well — cabinets, generators, water tanks, toolboxes, batteries, appliances, and spare tires are all part of the trailer's overall weight distribution.

7. Secure the Load

Correct weight distribution doesn't help if the cargo moves while you're driving. Cargo should be properly restrained using equipment appropriate for the load, which might include E-Track, D-rings, ratchet straps, wheel chocks, wheel nets, tie-down straps, or other properly rated cargo restraints.

Tie-down equipment should be appropriately rated and used according to its manufacturer's instructions.

Loading Cars and Equipment

Car hauler and equipment trailers require special attention because a single vehicle or machine can represent most of the trailer's cargo weight. Moving a vehicle only a relatively short distance forward or backward can affect tongue weight.

Before transporting a vehicle or piece of equipment:

  • Verify its approximate weight
  • Verify trailer payload capacity
  • Confirm loading orientation
  • Check tongue weight
  • Secure all required tie-down points
  • Verify the rear door or ramp is completely secured
  • Confirm all trailer doors are latched
  • Check tires
  • Check lights
  • Verify trailer brake operation when applicable

Never assume that because a vehicle physically fits inside a trailer, the trailer is properly rated to transport it.

Vehicle Too Far Rearward

Tongue weight may become too light. Potential result: reduced stability and increased sway risk.

Vehicle Correctly Positioned

Proper tongue weight and axle loading are achieved within applicable manufacturer ratings — a properly balanced trailer and tow vehicle combination.

Vehicle Too Far Forward

Tongue weight may become excessive. Potential result: excessive load on the hitch or tow vehicle.

Don’t Forget the Tow Vehicle

Trailer ratings are only half of the equation. The tow vehicle must also be capable of handling the trailer. Important ratings can include:

  • Maximum trailer weight
  • Maximum tongue weight
  • Hitch rating
  • Receiver rating
  • Rear axle rating
  • Vehicle GVWR
  • Payload capacity
  • GCWR

Passengers, fuel, tools, equipment and cargo carried inside the tow vehicle can affect available payload. Consult the tow vehicle manufacturer for the ratings applicable to your particular vehicle and configuration.

How Do You Measure Trailer Tongue Weight?

Tongue weight should be measured rather than guessed when an accurate figure is required. Depending on the trailer's weight, appropriate methods can include a purpose-built tongue-weight scale, certain commercial scales, or other manufacturer-approved weighing procedures.

For larger trailers or heavily loaded combinations, a certified public scale can be particularly useful for understanding actual vehicle and trailer weights.

Using a CAT or Certified Scale

A certified scale can help determine how much weight is actually being carried. Depending on the weighing procedure and scale configuration, measurements may help evaluate tow vehicle axle loads, trailer axle loads, combined weight, and changes in axle loading after connecting the trailer.

Compare measured weights against the applicable ratings for the tow vehicle and trailer.

Trailer sway can have multiple causes. Potential contributing factors include:

  • Improper weight distribution
  • Insufficient tongue weight
  • Excessive speed
