What Does Trailer Brake Gain Mean?
Brake gain determines how much braking power the controller sends to the trailer.
Too little gain:
The tow vehicle may feel like it is doing most of the stopping.
Too much gain:
The trailer brakes may feel overly aggressive or may lock the wheels.
Properly adjusted gain:
The tow vehicle and trailer should slow together smoothly.
Brake gain should be adjusted according to the instructions provided by the tow vehicle, brake controller, and trailer component manufacturers.
Trailer weight can also affect the appropriate setting.
A trailer loaded with a vehicle or equipment may require a different setting than the same trailer when empty.
Do All Trailer Axles Have Brakes?
Not necessarily.
Brake configuration depends on the trailer, axle setup, manufacturer specifications, and applicable laws.
On many tandem-axle enclosed trailers equipped with electric brakes, braking assemblies may be installed on multiple wheels.
However, buyers should verify the actual brake configuration of the specific trailer they are purchasing rather than assuming every axle is equipped with brakes.
Trailer Brakes and Axle Capacity
The brake assembly used on a trailer is generally matched to the axle and hub configuration.
Common enclosed trailer axle capacities include:

What Is a Trailer Breakaway System?
Trailers equipped with electric brakes commonly use a breakaway system as an emergency safety device.
The system generally includes:
- Breakaway switch
- Breakaway cable
- Trailer-mounted battery
- Electric trailer brakes
If the trailer becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle, the breakaway cable pulls the pin from the switch.
The trailer battery then supplies power to activate the trailer brakes.
Important
The breakaway cable should be connected to an appropriate attachment point on the tow vehicle according to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.
Do not assume the breakaway system is working simply because the trailer brakes operate normally through the brake controller.
The battery, switch, wiring, and brake system all need to function correctly.
7-Way Trailer Plug and Brakes
Electric trailer brakes typically receive their braking signal through the trailer’s electrical connection to the tow vehicle.
A common connection on larger enclosed trailers is the 7-way RV-style connector.

Damage, corrosion, or poor connections at the plug can cause trailer brake or lighting problems.

- Brakes grabbing aggressively

Proper trailer braking is important, but safe towing depends on the entire trailer and tow vehicle combination.
Before towing, also verify:
- Correct tow vehicle capacity
- Proper hitch and ball rating
- Proper trailer loading
- Appropriate tongue weight
- Correct tire pressure
- Properly torqued lug nuts
- Working lights
- Connected safety chains
- Functional breakaway system
- Trailer brakes operating correctly
