Trailer brakes are one of the most important safety systems on a cargo, utility, equipment, or car hauler trailer.

As trailer size and weight increase, relying on the tow vehicle alone to stop the entire combination can dramatically increase stopping distance and put unnecessary stress on the tow vehicle’s braking system.

Most larger enclosed trailers use electric drum brakes controlled by a brake controller installed in or integrated into the tow vehicle.

Understanding how the system works can help you tow more safely and recognize potential problems before they become serious.

How Do Electric Trailer Brakes Work?

Electric trailer brakes use an electrical signal from the tow vehicle to activate the brakes at the trailer wheels.

When the driver presses the brake pedal:

  1. Tow Vehicle Brake Pedal
  2. Brake Controller Sends Power
  3. Trailer Wiring Carries Power to the Brakes
  4. Electromagnets Activate Inside the Brake Assemblies
  5. Brake Shoes Press Against the Drums
  6. Trailer Slows With the Tow Vehicle

The amount of trailer braking can normally be adjusted through the brake controller.

What Is a Trailer Brake Controller?

A brake controller regulates the amount of braking force applied to a trailer’s electric brakes.

Many newer trucks have an integrated trailer brake controller from the factory.

Other tow vehicles may require an aftermarket controller.

Two common types are:

Proportional Brake Controllers

A proportional controller attempts to apply trailer braking in proportion to how aggressively the tow vehicle is slowing.

For example:

  • Light braking → Light trailer braking
  • Hard braking → Stronger trailer braking

This generally produces smoother braking when the system is properly adjusted.

Time-Delayed Brake Controllers

A time-delayed controller gradually increases braking power after the tow vehicle’s brakes are applied.

These systems can work effectively but may require more adjustment to achieve the desired braking feel.

What Does Trailer Brake Gain Mean?

Brake gain determines how much braking power the controller sends to the trailer.

Too little gain:
The tow vehicle may feel like it is doing most of the stopping.

Too much gain:
The trailer brakes may feel overly aggressive or may lock the wheels.

Properly adjusted gain:
The tow vehicle and trailer should slow together smoothly.

Brake gain should be adjusted according to the instructions provided by the tow vehicle, brake controller, and trailer component manufacturers.

Trailer weight can also affect the appropriate setting.

A trailer loaded with a vehicle or equipment may require a different setting than the same trailer when empty.

Do All Trailer Axles Have Brakes?

Not necessarily.

Brake configuration depends on the trailer, axle setup, manufacturer specifications, and applicable laws.

On many tandem-axle enclosed trailers equipped with electric brakes, braking assemblies may be installed on multiple wheels.

However, buyers should verify the actual brake configuration of the specific trailer they are purchasing rather than assuming every axle is equipped with brakes.

Trailer Brakes and Axle Capacity

The brake assembly used on a trailer is generally matched to the axle and hub configuration.

Common enclosed trailer axle capacities include:

Common Axle Capacity Typical Application
3,500 lb Smaller and midsize enclosed trailers
5,200 lb Car haulers and heavier cargo trailers
7,000 lb Heavy-duty car, race and equipment trailers

Axle capacity alone does not determine how much cargo a trailer can legally carry.

Always use the trailer’s actual GVWR and payload rating when determining allowable trailer weight.

What Is a Trailer Breakaway System?

Trailers equipped with electric brakes commonly use a breakaway system as an emergency safety device.

The system generally includes:

  • Breakaway switch
  • Breakaway cable
  • Trailer-mounted battery
  • Electric trailer brakes

If the trailer becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle, the breakaway cable pulls the pin from the switch.

The trailer battery then supplies power to activate the trailer brakes.

Important

The breakaway cable should be connected to an appropriate attachment point on the tow vehicle according to the equipment manufacturer’s instructions.

Do not assume the breakaway system is working simply because the trailer brakes operate normally through the brake controller.

The battery, switch, wiring, and brake system all need to function correctly.

7-Way Trailer Plug and Brakes

Electric trailer brakes typically receive their braking signal through the trailer’s electrical connection to the tow vehicle.

A common connection on larger enclosed trailers is the 7-way RV-style connector.

Depending on the trailer and tow vehicle configuration, the connector can carry circuits for functions such as:

  • Trailer brakes
  • Brake lights
  • Turn signals
  • Running lights
  • Ground
  • Auxiliary/charging power
  • Reverse or auxiliary circuit

Damage, corrosion, or poor connections at the plug can cause trailer brake or lighting problems.

Signs Your Trailer Brakes Need Attention

Trailer brakes should be inspected if you notice:

  • Trailer pushing the tow vehicle during braking
  • Weak braking performance
  • Trailer pulling to one side
  • Brakes grabbing aggressively
  • Wheels locking unexpectedly
  • Unusual grinding or scraping noises
  • Brake controller warnings
  • Intermittent trailer connection
  • Excessive heat near a wheel or hub
  • Damaged wiring
  • Uneven braking

Do not continue towing a trailer with a known braking problem until the cause has been properly evaluated.

Trailer Brake Inspection Checklist

How Often Should Trailer Brakes Be Inspected?

There isn’t one inspection interval appropriate for every trailer.

Inspection and service requirements can vary based on:

  • Axle manufacturer
  • Brake manufacturer
  • Trailer manufacturer
  • Mileage
  • Trailer weight
  • Towing frequency
  • Road conditions
  • Operating environment

Heavy-use trailers may require more frequent attention than trailers that are only occasionally towed.

Always follow the maintenance schedule specified by the trailer and component manufacturers.

Electric Brakes vs. Hydraulic Surge Brakes

Two braking systems buyers may encounter are electric and hydraulic surge brakes.

For enclosed cargo trailers and car haulers, electric brakes are extremely common.

Brakes Are Only Part of Safe Towing

Proper trailer braking is important, but safe towing depends on the entire trailer and tow vehicle combination.

Before towing, also verify:

  • Correct tow vehicle capacity
  • Proper hitch and ball rating
  • Proper trailer loading
  • Appropriate tongue weight
  • Correct tire pressure
  • Properly torqued lug nuts
  • Working lights
  • Connected safety chains
  • Functional breakaway system
  • Trailer brakes operating correctly

Never exceed the ratings of the trailer, hitch, tires, axles, or tow vehicle.
